Years of wearing heavy earrings can leave you with an enlarged and unsightly ear piercing. Or worse, you can develop a completely split ear lobe. Sometimes, an earring can get caught on some clothing and one quick pull can leave with you a painful, traumatically torn ear lobe.
Repair of an ear lobe is a minor procedure that is done under local anesthesia. It involves trimming away the skin that has healed within the split, and then suturing the two sides back together to give a symmetric and pleasing appearance. Typically, we ask our patients to wait at least three months before re-piercing their ear. We also ask that the new piercing be at least 3mm from the old piercing site.
