Scar Treatment

Atrophic scars

The blemishes left behind on the face after a bad acne breakout are typically atrophic scars. These types of scars occur when the scar is forming but there is not enough collagen present. There are 3 types of atrophic scars which are ice pick scars, rolling scars, and boxcar scars.

Ice pick scars

These are typically small or oval holes that are also narrow and deep. These are the most difficult to treat.

Rolling scars

They get their name from their hill and valley-like appearance. Rolling scars have rounded edges and wide depressions.

Boxcar scars

These are wide and u-shaped. Boxcar scars can be shallow or deep, with the former being easier to treat.

Hypertrophic (Raised) Scars

Found on the chest and back, hypertrophic scars are a result of acne being in these locations. They appear above the surface of the skin and develop due to too much collagen while healing.

The only way to definitely know what type of acne scarring you have is to visit a dermatologist. It’s also important to note that before treating acne scars, it’s best to make sure your acne is completely gone.

1. Microdermabrasion

This procedure involves deeply exfoliating and removing the top layer of the skin with probe

2. Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are used to even out the skin. With these injections, composed of collagen, fat, or other commercial fillers, depressed scars can plump up and fill out.

3. Chemical peeling

With this form of acne scar treatment, a strong acid is used to remove the top layer of the skin.

4. Laser resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing removes the top layer of the skin and has a fast healing time. Pulsed light sources can help reduce the appearance of scars. However, laser skin resurfacing is subtle. It’s not uncommon to have it done a few times in order to achieve the best results.

5. Microneedling

This procedure uses a small handheld pen or needle-studded roller to pierce numbed skin. As it heals, the skin produces collagen, which can plump and even out skin. The results for microneedling are also subtle, and there may need to be repeated sessions.

6. Minor surgery

Large acne scar  may leave behind a smaller scar, but it should fade over time. There is also subcision, which is when a scar is lifted by loosening the fibers beneath it. This brings the scar closer to the surface so it’s less noticeable.
